From Words To Views | The Perfect Mother

A French series with limited episodes which talks about the mother daughter relationship in current times. Shuttling between Paris and Berlin but the storyline mainly taking place in Paris, this crisp plot line challenges many misconceptions surrounding the perfect family. Although the focus is more on a mother’s role in establishing such a perfect family settings, but it also addresses the relationship dynamics among other family members comprising it.

The plot revolves around the mother-daughter duo of Hélène Berg and Anya Berg, where the former is an ex-Paris resident and the latter happens to be a student in Paris. The first episode opens with celebration of Hélène’s birthday in Berlin which is attended by her husband and son, her daughter who is studying in Paris is not part of the celebrations even virtually. Thinking about her, they sent out messages and videos.

Anya checks these messages and videos later as she is enjoying a night out with her friend in Paris. This outing ends in the smart and expensive apartment of a young man who is now gruesomely murdered. Being the only one present at the time of the murder, the police investigation points towards Anya. Not only she is suspected of this murder but also is a victim of the heinous sexual assault committed by that murdered man.

Thus Anya’s mother steps in to save her daughter and she takes help of her childhood sweetheart- Vincent who is now a successful lawyer. Acting as an amateur investigator, Hélène makes significant progress in finding the true nature of this crime and possible murder suspect. Because of her and Vincent’s efforts, Anya is released from the prison.

However, there are sudden twists and turns when Hélène sees the truth for what it is and Vincent becomes her confidant in more ways than one. Confronted with her choices of either continuing the role of a perfect mother (wife/woman) or taking an independent path to live a life with burden of the truth, Hélène is ultimately left alone. So what should a perfect mother who has gone so far her child, should do?

This crucial question is left for the viewers to answer and that becomes one of the major strength of the story. Having a limited series with fast paced episodes reveals so much about the characters in such a short span of time but at the same time it makes the viewers to pause and think. Surely worth your time for a one time watch.
