On a typical Saturday night, three boys set out in the late evening to attend a party. The car is driven by Rodney, Ben is sitting just next to him and Max is in the back seat. Although the story is of these three friends, it belongs more to Max.
Max- the dreamer, the philosopher of the trio; thinking of people he will meet, experiences he will have and the way his life is going to be once he crosses the threshold of adulthood by entering into the college life. Till such time, his life is all about playing the cool guy with his school friends.
We don’t have much glimpse into the minds of either Rodney or Ben; although, we get to visit Rodney’s home or to be precise his brother Oscar’s room to find the weed. Which is accidentally discovered by Max, even though he was not searching with interest but as his friends put it ‘he has eyes behind eyes’.
So the trio sets off for the party, weed and all in place. But the major challenge is the address of that eponymous party house; here we get the glimpse of Cincinnati neighborhoods- all quite and composed. So finally they take the help of one Harold who is walking his dog and is being chased by Carl (in red barrette ) with rifle in hand.
The moment we find the storyline is slightly wavering its brought back to the original track by Max’s musings; his dreams of entering Yale, his crush named Claire, his part time work with Jerry at golf course – just goes on present his humble background. Making it clear why the story is about cicadas and the talk alluding to metamorphosis.
Quite simply put; just like the cicadas, these boys are on the verge of new life, morphing into a new persona after 17 years of hibernation or in the boys’ cases, their adolescent years. Like the party, they are quite eager to embrace the changes and challenges of a new reality.
