The Housewife | Natalie Barelli

This is my second book by Natalie Barelli that I read in the span of a year, as I am certainly amazed by her writing style. Like the previous one, this novel also follows a complicated mystery from its female protagonist’s perspective

Jodie dreams of being the perfect housewife, as it’s been her only dream since childhood.

She absolutely enjoys all aspects of house rendering, from toiletries to furnishings, from cooking to cleaning, and from makeup to making up things. She has been obsessed with these housekeeping details for almost all of her life. So, you would think that she would be pleased with herself, striving to be the perfect housewife for Dr. Roy Davies.

Well, not exactly. As the story progresses, we can understand her reasons for marrying Roy and entering his home. But as happens in other Natalie Barell novels, the narrative shifts with unreliable characters and their unrealistic backstories. If you are familiar with these domestic thriller novels, then surely you can guess the hidden motives and get a clue about the next twist. It becomes a bit obvious to pick out the defectors from this storyline.

Still, it’s an enjoyable read. Even if you are not familiar with these mystery thriller tropes, you can immerse yourself in this quick-paced novel. Of course, the final twist is unpredictable and adds extra charm to the already complex storyline.

All in all, this book is worth your time and a perfect accompaniment to finish in one go over the weekend.
