The Perfect Son | Freida McFadden

The Cass family has everything that a seemingly normal upper middle class family aspires and requires. This family unit is made up of Dad-Jason, Mom-Erica, daughter- Hannah and son- Liam. They are living a hum drum life in a township on Long Island.

There are no evident tensions or struggles on the surface of this typical American family life. While Jason is busy building successful business ventures, Erica has taken a backseat in her journalism career to focus on family. As a mother, Erica takes her responsibility fairly seriously.

She is affectionate towards Hannah but struggling to come to terms with her teenager personality. Erica is rather more attentive towards her son, Liam who is considered to be a perfect son with his behavior, demeanor, academic progress and overall mannerism towards people. However, these are not the only reasons why his mother is more focused on Liam. As the story progresses, we get to know the hidden dark side of Liam’s nature that has been masked by his affable persona.

But all hell breaks loose when Olivia- Liam’s classmate suddenly goes missing from her home. Incidentally the last person to see her in person was Liam who sneaked away from home to meet her late into the night. Considering his psychological proclivities, Liam becomes the prime suspect of this disappearance case and gets under the legal scanner. From here on, things start moving at a breakneck speed as one after another revelations are brought to light till the real culprit crashes into the picture. That final revelations are definitely shocking and lands a gut to the punch.

Like most of Freida McFadden’s books, this is also a fast paced thriller with an unexpected climax. That sharp turn in the final chapter is so riveting that even her loyal readers will be stunned. But what’s not surprising is the open ended nature of its ending like leaving us on a cliffhanger with a teasing closure. Will there be a part two??!!! If yes then we will surely look forward to it.

It’s sharp, crisp and perfect for finishing it one sitting. Go for it!!
