This novel begins on a promising note, where we meet Meredith McGillicutty as a fifty-two-year-old self-made career woman. So far, she has done well, progressing steadily at work. Financially, too, she seems secure, flipping multiple homes and making a decent profit. Till one day, it all comes crashing down when she is denied a long-overdue promotion in favor of someone new and, might I add, younger.

That’s the moment when Meredith’s well-secured world, containing her career aspirations, comes crashing down.

This is fuelled further by the indecisive nature of her romantic relationship with Peter.

Thus, Meredith calls it quits on her hum-drum corporate job and decides to move into a retirement community by lying about her age. Eventually, we realize it wasn’t the only thing Meredith was lying about.

But that part comes later, much later in the story. What happens once she moves into the eponymous trailer park is quite endearing to read. Considering her nature and attitude, she soon starts inserting herself into the conversations and lives of her trailer park neighbors.

From here on, the story becomes predictable, and we, as readers of such cozy, charming, life-altering stories, can almost see where it’s headed. It becomes abundantly clear by the time Amy’s decision is finalized, and Patric’s dramatic entry is scripted.

Still, we have to appreciate Katie Powner’s writing for keeping Meredith’s arc from getting too mushy and her story from getting so cheesy that we lose interest. That interest is bound to pique when readers discover Lois’ particular adventure.

So, I will recommend it to readers who love feel-good stories with eccentric but mildly amusing characters. It’s entertaining to read this self-discovery saga of Meredith McGillicutty among other characters from the Second Chance Trailer Park.
