Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver

At the heart of this book is loneliness. And the book weaves it’s theme of primal instincts around this.

The story revolves around Lena, Garnett and Deanna- these are our central characters having their own character graphs and stories happening around or about them. Each of one of them is lonely in their own way, either by choice or by situation or a combination of both.

Deanna is alone by her choice; after trying out university education, married life and living in the big city, here she is in the wilderness. All by herself and probably more content being with nature than with humans in all her life.

Lena is alone by situation due to recent tragedy in her married life. She is also a big city girl, educated in college, part of mixed heritage who has left all this behind to be with her husband. But even she is content being surrounded by so much of nature around her,

Garnett on the other hand, is a local teacher who is born in this county and knows the surrounding nature more than anyone else perhaps. This is part of his legacy, a kind of nature’s heritage being part of his family line. He is lonely because he doesn’t want to be around more people after his wife’s unfortunate death and his choice to focus more on keeping the family legacy alive beyond his life.

And then comes the Summer; with it’s promise of new lives, nature’s bounty and opening of earth’s heart.

How each of them- Deanna, Lena & Garnett traverse through the summer is what this novel is all about. Without giving much away, we can safely say that their hearts get mended by the bursts of summer light.

Like a river after a summer storm, there stories come rushing forward only to become intertwined at the end. Somewhat unexpected but pleasant surprise!

A recommended read for anyone in awe and love of nature, creature and the all encompassing love.
