The Minion of Midas based on the short story of the same name by Jack London in 1901, takes place in modern day Madrid. The premise of this screen adaptation revolves around Víctor Genovés who has inherited the widely respected and famous Malvar group after the death of his mentor. Victor is equally astonished by his inheritance, just like rest of the board is and at least few suspect that he is not capable enough to shoulder such an enormous responsibility.
El Observador Nacional is the crown jewel of the Malvar group and always known for its journalistic integrity and unbiased reporting. However, these standards are tested when one of its reporter- Monica decides to publish a story related to Syrian war having direct links to Banco Industrial De Madrid. The said bank is not only a powerful financial conglomerate in Spain but also one of the major stakeholders in the Malvar Group.
The timing of this article couldn’t have been more unfortunate as it coincides with the time when Victor has received a mysterious letter from a certain Minions of Midas demanding 50 million Euros in ransom, which failing to pay will result in the unfortunate death of any random person within prescribed days. With so much turmoil in the professional life compounded with a bitter divorce battle in his personal life, Victor decides to ignore this letter as a prank. This ignorance proves fatal for him and for many unsuspecting strangers.
After realising his mistakes, Victor seeks help from Detective Conte and hands over all the letters to him for further investigations. From here, the story catches speed as there are distinct three tracks running parallel to each other. But the major focus is on two tracks- first being (Monica’s) the bombshell article rippling across the newspaper as well as the group and second track consisting of sudden deaths on the heels of continuous threats coming from the mysterious extortionists.
The third track of what happens to the Malvar group comes in the prominence only by the final episode of the series. Till that time, the above mentioned two tracks keep the viewers sufficiently engaged. The ending of this limited series is as enigmatic as the namesake group demanding ransoms. It will surely keep the viewers scratching their heads even when the final credits roll.
Recommended for those audiences who enjoy head spinning plot lines with sudden twist in the form of political drama.
