The year is 1813 and a new season is just around the corner. This new season is all the more important for the social lives of London households as it’s the season of matchmaking. So, across town all the Mammas are grooming their daughters for their debuts on the social season. It’s all fun and frolics for the youngsters but it’s serious matchmaking game for their parents.
At this particular year, all eyes are on the debutant of the year – Daphne Bridgerton. Not only is she the most beautiful girl of the town but also a Bridgerton- Daughter and sister of a Viscount. So it’s not surprising that everyone is watching her debut with keen eyes – from the Royal household to her neighbours.
Dubbed as the ‘Diamond of the season’ by the Queen Charlotte herself; Daphne is under lots of pressure and scrutiny to pick a wise match. Because of this and also due to the not-so-helpful elder brother of her’s, she cooks up a fabulous plan with Simon, the Duke of Hastings. Simon has agreed to this because of his turbulent childhood which has lead to the resolve of never to sire any heirs for the Hasting line.
Well, Daphne plays a central character and key figure to take this story forward but thankfully, she is not the sole focus of this drama series. We get introduced to other Bridgerton children also, who are named alphabetically from A to H. The eldest one Anthony is trying his best to be the head of the family and fulfil his duties as a Viscount. He has two more brothers, out of which Colin (3rd Bridgerton) just saves himself from a scandal in the nick of the time. However, the most interesting of this lot is Eloise – a sister year younger to Daphne. Eloise is in the awe of her ever-so-perfect older sister. Unlike Daphne she is terrified of social seasons and the matchmaking charade in general. Her favourite activity is to pick up a good book and immerse herself, of course while nibbling some yummy candies. But certainly what Eloise enjoys more than anything is reading the latest scoop from Lady Whistledown.
However, Eloise is not the only one who enjoys reading social scoops from Lady Whistledown but the entire town is enthralled by it. Lady Whistledown is the last word on society happenings from the best preserved secrets to hushed down controversies, nothing can hide from her. Even the Queen is one of her esteemed reader and then becomes cross with her for omitting the Royal Luncheon. This gossip paper is something like TMZ or E of the 19th century albeit in print and with fancy language.
This is not just Bridgertons’ story but we get to meet their neighbors and acquaintances too. There are tons of interesting characters throughout the series such as Lady Danbury. Since this series is based on a book series, so eventually we will get to learn more about each of these characters as the story progresses.
All-in-all, this is a very interesting drama with multiple interesting characters and some amazing costumes. At the heart, however it’s a love story and it doesn’t lose that focus a bit. Another noteworthy thing about this series is their casting; coming from an acclaimed producer who is famous for having multiracial characters at the forefront of her stories, this series also follows the suit. This just makes this bygone era story all the more modern and appealing to all kinds of audiences.
Definitely recommended as an easygoing saga having relatable characters and fantastic storytelling.
