If you are looking for a thrilling ride with fast paced storyline and superb acting chops, then this is the film for you. Not only it’s has a madcap motley crew but it also hilariously dramatic in almost all the frames.
Based on the Japanese novel called Burutasu No Shinzou (Eng: Heart of Brutus), first published in 1989 and written by Keigo Higashino; director Vasan Bala has adapted it to the screen with an Indian context.
The story is firmly set in Pune, known as a major IT hub of India. So it’s no surprise that we find ourselves meeting a young and upcoming robotics specialist who is trying to make a name for himself in his field. His name is Jayant Arkhedkar and his dream of making it big comes true when the company he works for- Unicorn, promotes him to be a director. Of course, CEO Satyanarayan Adhikari has taken this decision after considering Jayant’s talents and not just for the fact that he is also engaged to CEO’s daughter- Nikki.
Here in the celebratory atmosphere, we first time meet the eponymous Monica and like Jayant, most people are charmed by her beauty.
However, all is not well with Unicorn as viewers find out in the first few minutes of the film itself. There is accidental death of Dev Prakash for which safety office Faridi Beg is already fired albeit denying his role in it.
Then there is Monica which audiences notice has more than one admirer and she is playing a safe game with each of them to settle for good in life. Few of her ardent fans include Jayant, CFO Arvind Manivannan and CEO’s son Nishikant Adhikari. Jayant meets both of them because of the mysterious letter received by him accompanied by few tantalising photographs. From here on, the three of them cook a plan to get rid of Monica but things go haywire and people start dropping like flies.
No wonder then Police starts circling Jayant and he gets more tangled in one mysterious incident after other. So, ACP Naidu enters into this already muddled mess of a storyline and viewers feel like Jayant’s secrets will come home to roost. Well, let’s just say that things go completely out of hands before all dots connecting together and the story of Monica finally coming full circle with Jayant.
What happens in this madcap murder mystery is a wonderful experience to watch it on screen. Added bonus are the scattered homages paid to the cult classics of Bollywood which successfully brought the genre of musical murder mystery to the country and made it so damn popular. So of course, homages are also paid to the creators of these gems like the inimitable Vijay Anand, R.D. Burman, Sriram Raghavan and others. The cinematic treatment, songs and crackling performances by the lead actors make this an excellent movie to watch.
