Based on the best selling novel Six Suspects by Vikas Swaroop, this series deals with a murder and tries to trace the murderer with different storylines presented from the perspective of these different suspects. So far so good as the basic plot of The Great Indian Murder follows the base premise of the book on which it is based on.
The series opens with brutal murders of two underage girls from an orphanage in Delhi and all the evidences lead Delhi Police to the farmhouse of Vicky Rai on the outskirts of the city. Considering the clout he has as a successful businessman and as the only son of a prominent politician, he tries to dodge his responsibilities in the aforementioned murders. But eventually he lands in prison for three years.
In present day, his father makes all the attempts to get Vicky out of the prison and finally succeeds in getting the charges dropped on flimsy grounds. Well, viewers are soon to be realised why Vicky deserved that prison statement as his character and past actions are led bear in the subsequent episodes.
At the same time, a government officer steals a precious artefact from remote tribals in Andaman Islands. Since the locals believed in the spiritual powers of it, therefore they are shocked by this surprisingly selfish act. Finally, they hatch a plan with the new government welfare officer to travel to mainland and retrieve the idol. Here enters Eketi in this storyline who being raised in a remote part of the country is as naive and ignorant about the mainland as the people of mainland are about them.
Parallel to all this is the drama unfolding in a state assembly far away from the capital which prominently involves Vicky Rai’s father Jagannath Rai. Although he has succeeded in his duty as a father for releasing his son from the prison sentence, he is not getting much luck in his political life. Because things get more murkier once he manages to bail out his son, his political future seems to be in falling in deep waters.
Still, Jagannath Rai agrees to attend the party thrown by Vicky to re-establish him in the city’s high flying set. No one has any idea that there are people who are vying for Vicky’s blood and that person can go to any extent to make him pay for his crimes. Thus the Great Murder happens and kicks off the investigation procedures helmed by Suraj Yadav of the Central Bureau of Investigation with DCP Sudha Bharadwaj.
The rest of the series revolves around this investigation and also the investigators themselves. With each episodes, more suspects are probed and more details about the characters are revealed. At one point, the entire plot line looks to confused to be followed by the viewers. However, the makers have managed to untangle this entire narrative in last few episodes.
Having hints to contemporary incidents and familiar characters, the story can feel contrived to some viewers. Still, it is good for a one time watch.
